I was chatting with a very successful digital nomad who loves to travel. This person sells their digital art pieces online and has found success by following art trends and marketing well. After continuing the conversation a little bit with this person, I decided that even though my artwork is not taking off as quickly as I would like, I am happy with the way I am conducting my business. It is still in the works, as I am still aiming towards a larger fan base for writing, but I’m able to take days off and spend time with friends and family. It’s possible to carry on a conversation without talking solely about my art or constantly be looking at a computer.
Some of the things that I am (working towards!) changing are:
- Increase in larger art sales (original works and consistent orders)
- Pricing my works higher (so spending more time per piece)
- Opening Etsy shop for various bulk and digital orders
- Deliberately sharing my work
- Maintaining conversations with people interested in my books and art at hannahmarie.shop (I pass out more business cards now!)
- Working in public spaces to build awareness of my artwork
- Actively looking for places to include my pieces
And some of the things that I love about the way I am doing business is:
💡I try to keep my posts bright and colorful
💡 I’m paying attention to some of my favorite business owners’ practices (and taking LOTS of notes)
💡 I lean into my personality when posting or painting

One of my goals is to stay consistent. I am working towards this by posting regularly and looking for ways to use my mediums:
💫 Post about my art on social media to share stories about my writing inspirations, new art on hannahmarie.shop, and daily learning opportunities
💫 Sticking to my daily writing schedule
💫 Practicing new techniques on how to layer and use my palette knives
💫 Creating more realism in watercolor through layering and adding ink
Perhaps there are still things for me to learn as a small business. But when I look over what I’ve accomplished in the last several months, I can’t help but be proud of the pieces I’ve sold and the stories that others have shared with me. That is exactly what I want! My theme for Hannah Marie. is “Storytelling through Art”.
It is difficult sometimes in the thick of details, but I try to maintain a creative mindset. As much as I can, I enjoy every moment!
