The Concept
This January 1 I will be working on another writing challenge! I’ve done this 24-hour challenge before, and I like how it throws something different into my writing schedule each new year. My timer will start at midnight on December 31 and continue until midnight on January 1.
During that time, I will focus on writing a first draft of a novel. I have looked up a few techniques for this project and combined them to work for me. It’s great when I get to the point of these challenges where I can make them work for my style of writing and not necessarily be constrained to rules.
Join me for your own writing adventure! In the past I’ve worked on short stories, poetry, and even editing a current work in progress. I enjoy setting aside the time to refocus and remind myself why I like to write in the first place.

The Details
If you haven’t already guessed, I am a plantser. This means I’m somewhere in the middle of a pantser, who solely writes from the seat of their pants, and a planner, who writes out a detailed outline. Over the last several years, really, as I’ve written more to finish my books, I’ve moved from a complete pantser to a plantser. The reason? I’ve learned that my writing is better shaped if I at least form a general outline before writing.
For this January, I am starting out with a modified snowflake method, which I am putting together right now. It should take several weeks, but I am speeding through it a bit (remember, I used to be a pantser) to be ready to go by the end of December. Overall, I hope to use the resulting outline to keep me focused, so that I can have a more substantial work at the end of the day. I’ve chosen a couple books that will help me with the background, and will mostly just write, to fill in more of the research later.
