A sobering perspective.

I’ve always loved the sound of rain. Ever since listening to the symphony on a tin roof while I slept in a hammock, I love to fall asleep to raindrop patters. I’m not sure that will change, but now every time I hear it rain, I will be reminded of these devastating floods that have occurred last month, less than two hours from my home. Some of the more prominent news coverage that I found was from missing girls from a Christian camp called Camp Mystic.

Do you know what I did during the summer as a kid? I went to a Christian camp. All girls. With my friends. And now some of these rescued girls will never see their friends again. When I was in college, I spent two summers working as a staff member at a camp, the same age as some of the counselors who died. It puts a sobering perspective on what I take for granted. It makes me grateful that rain has only been an annoyance at worst, not life-threatening. When you put it in perspective, daily annoyances, traffic, budget, or busy friends seem minuscule.

There is always something to complain about. And there is always someone going through something worse than I am. It’s in these moments of grief and heartache that remind us not to lose sight of what is really important. Family. Friends. Community. Giving. Kindness. Love. Sacrifice.

Please keep praying for the families affected!

Hannah Marie.
